Durdle Door is accessible 365 days a year. Since it is part of a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, July and August are extremely busy. Planning around peak hours saves time and frustration.

When is the best time of year to visit Durdle Door?

May and September are the best months to visit.

These shoulder months provide the most reliable weather for coastal walks without the severe congestion of the school holidays. You can easily walk the 1-mile path from Lulworth Cove or sit on the shingle beach in relative peace.

When is the best time of day to visit?

Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Midday crowds are massive in peak summer. Arriving at sunrise or close to sunset helps you avoid intense traffic. It also gives photographers the best lighting for capturing the 200-foot limestone arch.

What happens if I arrive at midday in peak summer?

The car park at Durdle Door Holiday Park fills up very quickly.

If you arrive between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm in July or August, you risk finding no parking. The beach itself will be crowded. You will also share the steep 143 cliff steps with hundreds of people.

Booking a guided tour can remove the stress of finding a parking spot entirely.

Is Durdle Door open at night?

No, access to the beach and viewpoint is not permitted after dusk.

While the estate is open 365 days a year, you must leave before dark. There is no lighting on the beach, the steep path, or the car park. Bring a torch if you plan to stay until late afternoon or sunset.

Does public transport run all year?

Yes, but bus services are much more frequent during the summer months.

The Jurassic Breezer bus routes connect Weymouth, Swanage, and Wool station directly to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. If you visit in winter, check the reduced timetables carefully before traveling.
